Review - JMBricklayer's Mechanical Hummingbird (70011)

I’ve been building with bricks for years, and every once in a while, a set comes along that completely redefines what I think is possible. I’ve got to say, the JMBricklayer Mechanical Hummingbird (70011) is one of those sets. I'd seen the pictures online and was intrigued, but having it in my hands and seeing it come together is something else entirely. This isn't just my new favorite set; it’s a masterpiece.

The Build: A Tale of Two Halves

The building process itself was fantastic, with over 1700 pieces that come together beautifully. But the real story here is the design philosophy. The absolute showstopper is the "two-sided" concept. It’s like getting two models in one.

On one side, you have this vibrant, stunningly beautiful hummingbird. The colors are brilliant—the greens, blues, and translucent fiery reds and yellows on the wings feel so alive. It’s perched on a tree branch, leaning towards a gorgeous, brick-built flower. It’s a perfect little slice of nature.

And then… you turn it around.

The other side is a complete work of steampunk/cyberpunk art. The feathers give way to exposed framework, with immaculate silver and gold gears, pipes, and mechanical greebling. You see the inner workings of the creature, a beautiful fusion of nature and machine. I spent a good ten minutes just rotating it after I finished, completely mesmerized by the contrast.

The Magic Moment: The Lighting System

Let's be honest, the magic truly happens when you turn on the lights. And this isn't just a few random LEDs. The lighting is integrated so thoughtfully that it transforms the entire piece. You have:

The Base: The "microscopic jungle" at the foot of the tree comes alive with little lights scattered amongst the flowers and tiny insects. It creates this enchanting, magical forest floor vibe.

The Tree & Flower: A glowing vine snakes its way up the tree trunk, and the large orange flower the hummingbird is aiming for has its own light, making it a clear focal point.

The Eyes (My Favorite Part!): And here’s a detail that absolutely blew me away, something you might miss if you don't look closely. The head has two different colored lights! From the "natural" side, the eye glows an intense, almost biological red. But turn it around to the mechanical side, and it glows a cool, cybernetic blue. It’s a genius touch that perfectly complements the dual theme.

A Neat Little Battery Box:  The whole system is powered by a neat little battery box at the base, which has three modes (On, Off, and a light-sensor mode that turns on in the dark!) and, thank goodness, it’s rechargeable via Type-C. No hunting for tiny batteries.

The Bottom Line: A True Centerpiece for Any Room

Let's be clear: as a display piece, the Mechanical Hummingbird is in a league of its own. It confidently crosses the boundary from being a "model" into the realm of "art." It has a presence that immediately draws the eye, no matter where you place it. It's the kind of piece that doesn't just sit on a shelf; it elevates the entire space.

It’s an inevitable conversation starter. Guests will walk in and say, "That's beautiful, what is it?" And that's when the fun begins. You get to show them the brilliant, colorful "nature" side, and then rotate it to reveal the stunningly intricate "mechanical" side, watching their expression change from appreciation to sheer amazement. Then you turn on the lights, and the whole piece transforms again into a magical, glowing spectacle.

We’ve all seen the promotional pictures of it displayed next to a vase of flowers or even a painting of "The Starry Night," and I can confirm it's not just a marketing gimmick—it genuinely belongs there. It shares the same creative energy. It has a level of elegance and conceptual depth that makes it feel right at home among other works of art.

This set isn't just for die-hard brick builders. It's for fans of steampunk, for nature lovers, for anyone who appreciates clever design, and frankly, for anyone looking for a truly unique and captivating piece of decor. JMBricklayer has truly outdone themselves. It’s an engaging build that results in a breathtaking model that is an experience from start to finish. It has my absolute highest recommendation. This one is something truly special.
